Based on New York Times Magazine’s 2016 article titled The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare, Dark Waters follows Robert Billot, a real-life figure and environmental lawyer, who starts a whole trial against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont.

After being asked to investigate an unexplained sequence of numerous animals’ deaths by farmer Wilbur Tennant, Billot connects the dots finding out that DuPont’s chemicals have been contaminating the town’s waters without anyone’s notice.

Being a short recap of Robert Billot’s attempts to sue DuPont for 20 years, Dark Waters was quick to gain the overall acclaim upon its release back in 2019. Despite relatively humble box office results of $23 million, the movie yet landed a major score of 89% from the critics and 95% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes with many viewers calling the film eye opening about the crimes DuPont has been trying to hide for years.

Apart from Billot’s personal fight with DuPont’s contaminative activity, Dark Waters also had a surprising impact on the chemical company’s reputation.
