Recently Netflix released the first season of 3 Body Problem, based on the book of the same name by Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin. This novel and its two sequels in the 2000s made Cixin the most popular author in his country.
With such fame, a movie adaptation was only a matter of time. The creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, took over the development of the adaptation.
3 Body Problem Was a Good Sci-Fi Show, But Not a Masterpiece
Before its release, there were many concerns about whether the series would be at least somewhat interesting: the book seemed too complicated, and Benioff and Weiss tarnished their reputations with the ending of Game of Thrones. 3 Body Problem turned out to be not perfect, but very exciting – a little rushed, but addictive from the first minutes.
However, many viewers admit that no matter how good 3 Body Problem is, it is not the best sci-fi show of the 21st century. Fans of the genre recommend another show that they believe is even better than the adaptation of Liu Cixin’s cult novel.

The show Colony by Carlton Cuse, co-creator of the cult series Lost, is different. The aliens do not appear on screen in the pilot or in the following episodes of the first season.
What is Colony About?
In the near future, the US is occupied by aliens. Without being seen by anyone, they rule the country with the help of automated surveillance systems and numerous collaborators. The country is divided into closed sectors, and one of these sectors is Los Angeles, where the Bowman family lives.
Before the occupation, Will Bowman was an FBI agent, but now he works as a car mechanic and hides his past. When collaborators catch him trying to cross the city's border illegally, Will is exposed and the governor invites him to return to his old job and work on identifying members of the Resistance.
Will agrees, unaware that he will be hunting, among others, his own wife Katie, a trusted member of the Resistance.
Colony Focuses Mainly on Human Struggles
The main advantage of Colony as a sci-fi project is its down-to-earth nature. The main focus of the series is the war between the collaborators and the members of the Resistance. The former are not portrayed as fiends of hell and the latter as perfect heroes. The Resistance fights righteously with unjust methods, and the collaborators do not always act like callous servants of a foreign regime.
