It's yet another reason for fans to be upset that the show was axed so heartlessly.

Fans were eagerly awaiting the third season of NCIS: Hawai’i, considered by many to be the best NCIS project, and when the show finally started airing, it ended right there: the series was canceled after the third season. Thus, Hawai’i became the NCIS project with the shortest run, which it obviously did not deserve.

Moreover, fans hoped that within a month of the cancellation news, the writers would have time to come up with a worthy ending that would conclude the arcs of all the characters. However, what fans saw in the final episode may have upset them even more than the cancellation itself – a big, fat cliffhanger.

What Was the Twist in The NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 Finale?

The episode ended with a seemingly fitting farewell to the main characters in the form of a surprise party for Jane. However, literally at the last minute of the episode, viewers were stunned by a new twist – in the final scene, Jane meets with her mentor Maggie, who is going to tell the seemingly shocking news.

The main question among fans was why it was impossible to cut out the last 30-40 seconds of the episode so as not to end the canceled series on such a blatant cliffhanger? However, it is worth noting that sometimes the creators of the show resort to such a move in order to save the last hope of the project – an open ending can provoke a new wave of reaction from fans and, in theory, convince the channel bosses to extend the series for at least one more season.

Some viewers, knowing in advance that the episode would end on a cliffhanger, did not even watch the final scene and turned it off at the surprise party.

“I read [...] that there was a cliffhanger at the end so I stopped watching before the cliffhanger, for me it ended with them all having drinks,” Reddit user AssumptionQuirky377 wrote.

NCIS: Hawai’i Ended With More Than Decent Ratings

The fans' dissatisfaction is understandable, but it just got bigger.

The final season of NCIS: Hawai’i went out with a bang – the latest episode, which aired on Monday, drew the largest audience since the first episode with 5.41 million viewers.

Such decent ratings have fans once again questioning whether it was really necessary to cancel a show that proved so popular with viewers.
