It's no secret Harry Potter is praised and adored by his many fans for being brave and humble. But if you've read all the books from the series or seen all the movies, you'll know that Harry has also made quite a few questionable choices along the way.

From refusing to learn Occlumency to stealing a car, we can say with confidence that this young wizard has managed to surprise us with his bad choices more than once. But what is the dumbest thing Harry Potter has ever done? We think we have the answer.

Not Opening the Gift From Sirius Black

The dumbest (and most infuriating) thing Harry Potter has ever done is not opening the gift from Sirius Black, without a doubt.

There's One Harry Potter Character Fans Hate the Most, and It's Not Voldemort

Let's start from the beginning. This happened in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth book of the series. Harry Potter's godfather, Sirius Black, gave him a gift at the end of the Christmas holidays. Inside, there was a magic two-way mirror that could be used to communicate with him. Harry, however, didn't want to open the present because he was worried its contents could get Sirius in trouble. And what does he do with the package, you might ask? He puts it away and simply forgets about its existence, of course. Only after Sirius's death does he come across the mirror and realize his mistake, but it's too late to change what happened.

What Would Have Changed If He Had Opened the Package?

So, let's imagine Harry actually did the smart thing and opened the gift and used the mirror. What could've happened? Well, this would've saved him a suicidal trip to the Department of Mysteries for one. If he had managed to contact Sirius, then the battle would never have happened, and Sirius would probably still be alive. But this would also mean that Kreacher wouldn't have gone into Harry's possession, which would mean he wouldn't have learned about Salazar Slytherin's locket and its whereabouts. While the possible outcomes are endless, we could say everything happens for a reason in this plot!

What Do Viewers Have to Say About This?

What has upset all the fans is that he wasn't even curious enough to take a peek inside the package. Or better yet, use it. Some say that this, in fact, showcases his biggest character flaw – being too quick to spring into action to save people, often forgetting the most obvious solutions. On the other hand, others say in his defense that he forgot to open it because he had a lot of things going on. But we think that's not a good excuse. What do you think?
