We were all amazed by that one sequence, and so did the sci-fi industry giant.

Summary:

  • Steven Spielberg has recently praised Dune: Part Two, comparing Villeneuve to the most accomplished filmmakers of all time.
  • The famous director highlighted one particular scene, calling it “one of the greatest things” he has ever seen.

If you think that Dune’s fever is reaching its end one month after its theatrical release, you’re deeply wrong. More and more people, including filmmakers, are joining the Denis Villeneuve’s admirers club these days, and now we can add one incredibly recognized name to their list, the one of Hollywood's acclaimed master of sci-fi, Steven Spielberg.

The point is that the two mentioned directors sat down for the latest episode of the DGA's Director's Cut podcast, where Spielberg expressed his praise for Villeneuve’s epic saga.

Famous for his box office enormous successes, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993), he called Dune: Part Two “one of the most brilliant science fiction films” he’s ever seen.

More than that, in his statement Spielberg placed Dune’s director among other giants of the industry, such as Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, James Cameron and Christopher Nolan. This quite loud but fair comparison served as emphasizing Villeneuve’s outstanding ability to build fictional worlds that convince the audience.

Speaking of what he liked of Dune 2 the most, Spielberg confessed he became a big fan of sandworms, which are featured jaw-droppingly on screen despite the lack of the description of their mechanics in Frank Herbert’s novels.

The Schindler’s List director pointed out that the scene of riding the colossal beasts is made so smooth and impeccably spectacular, that the movie’s deserts resembled waters of an ocean.

“The sandworms were like sea serpents. And that scene surfing the sandworms is one of the greatest things I have ever seen," Spielberg expressed his genuine awe.

Indeed, watching Timothée Chalamet’s character riding upon a giant worm is definitely quite an incredible experience. Villeneuve himself stated that creating that scene was one of his most favorite and at the same time toughest challenges with Dune 2.

“I wanted to feel the speed and I wanted to feel the danger, and the technical approach I wanted to take was very complex and required a lot of time,” confessed the filmmaker.

There is a strong feeling that the worm-surfing Dune sequence will enter the list of the best scenes in movie history. You can decide whether Steven Spielberg is right about it by seeing Dune: Part Two in theaters.
