From Stanley Kubrick’s timeless classic to Andrei Tarkosvky’s biggest hit — yes, you’re all set with that Max subscription.

With all the variety of big streamers and their vast collections, it might be hard to imagine a movie or a show remaining some kind of mystery that not a single digital platform has an access to.

However, there’s still plenty of extremely successful projects out there which have been hiding pretty well on these platforms all this time, with many of them being an old classic that is still regarded as some of the greatest films humanity ever dared to make.

Such hidden gems can be found in any cinematic genre, but sci-fi movies are probably another record breaker, especially since not many are aware that these brilliant films have always been there, for some reason often ignored by Max’s viewers.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

One of the biggest hits directed by acclaimed Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a movie that definitely was ahead of its time, appearing as an impressive sci-fi flick even for modern viewers more than 50 years after its initial release.

Based on Arthur C. Clarke’s several stories, the film follows two astronauts whose journey to Jupiter and the investigation of the planet’s alien life will change their own once and for all.

Kubrick’s epic sci-fi still serves as a great inspiration for filmmakers of these days, including for Christopher Nolan whose Interstellar just couldn’t have become another hit of the genre without several nods to the old classic.

RoboCop (1987)

Paul Verhoeven’s highly acclaimed sci-fi action movie was so influential at the time it eventually spawned two sequels and a live-action TV show, though these days the movie doesn’t seem to have lost a bit of its popularity either.

Hiding within itself a powerful social message, RoboCop follows Officer Alex Murphy whose body is used for creating the prototype of RoboCop, a machine that would patrol the streets in a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit.

However, there’s an unexpected turn for RoboCop’s mother company Omni Consumer when its creation, having learnt about the evil corporation’s real plans, suddenly turns against his masters.

Stalker (1979)

In a similar way to Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker remains one of the most influential sci-fi movies of all time, also created by someone widely regarded as one of the greatest directors in the modern history of cinema.

With a perfect critical score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has its events unfolding in a fiercely protected post-apocalyptic wasteland known as The Zone; an illegal guide, portrayed by Aleksandr Kajdanovsky, operates there to bring the most curious ones to a mythical place called The Room and known for its ability to fulfil everyone’s biggest wishes.

Godzilla ( 1954)

Ishirō Honda’s epic sci-fi that spawned a franchise of more than 40 movies to-date, Godzilla is a pure cinematic masterpiece whose themes speak loudly more than 70 years later.

Introducing one of the most fear-inducing monsters in the history of cinema, Godzilla sees Japan’s authorities dealing with the unexpected appearance of a giant sea creature, which raises the tension amid everyone’s concern about another nuclear holocaust in the country that just recently got dragged by World War II.

Splice (2009)

Starring this year’s Oscar winner Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, Splice follows a couple of scientists specialising in splicing animal DNA to eventually create hybrids, so far unseen to science history.

When their work is jeopardised by a prohibition to use human DNA, the duo is forced to continue their experiments in secret and later succeeds in bringing to life Dren, a hybrid with human intelligence and animal physical attributes.

However, as Dren keeps evolving with time, the couple’s invention is getting more likely to become their biggest trouble and worst nightmare.
