The Draco Malfoy star addresses fans’ biggest delusion: according to him, every Harry Potter movie could be the last.

Summary:

  • The Harry Potter movies are universally beloved around the world, but the series wasn’t planned as such at first.
  • According to Tom Felton, every Harry Potter movie could be the last both for its actors and in general.
  • This lack of planning on the studio’s part explains the inconsistencies between the eight movies.

For all their flaws and imperfections, the Harry Potter movies are golden classics, and instant ones at that. Adored and rewatched on a regular basis by millions of fans all over the world, this series tells one long story… But apparently, it was never planned as a series at all, and each movie could be the last when they filmed them.

Tom Felton’s Revelation Raises Eyebrows

Can you imagine that the Harry Potter movie franchise just ended abruptly on The Prisoner of Azkaban or The Order of the Phoenix? We can’t, either. But according to Tom Felton, that was not just possible — that was everyone’s default attitude to it.

“People always assumed that we were gonna make the eight films from day one, and that was never the case. It was always, ‘We're gonna make one. That did okay, so we're gonna make another one.’ We were never promised the fact that we were gonna all be coming back next year. I think we all assumed that they would replace us with half-decent actors at some point,” the Draco Malfoy star shared with Collider.

Imagine the backlash a sudden Harry Potter movies’ cancellation would have caused among the fans! But as wild as Tom Felton’s words sound, we can totally see that.

Tom Felton’s Words Explain Quite a Lot

One of the worst aspects of the Harry Potter movie series is its inconsistency. With directors changing every other movie, the backdrop, atmosphere, and very rules of the Wizarding World shifted significantly between the installments. Some movies followed the source books closely while others deviated to the point of absurdity.

Tom Felton’s revelation perfectly explains why that happened. If Warner Bros. was not fully invested in the Harry Potter franchise, they didn’t plan ahead too much; when the previous movie showed great results, they began planning the next one. Such lack of planning explains the lack of consistency… And it’s quite sad, really.
