The new historical drama will follow events after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

American history has a lot for filmmakers to pore over, especially when it comes to mysterious events, the complete truth about which seems to never become known.

This time Apple TV turns to yet another interesting topic for all history lovers — the platform has just released a new series called Manhunt where everything is about Abraham Lincoln’s figure, but it’s not him who is the real main character.

The plot will be focused on the search of Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, actor John Wilkes Booth, right after the latter brutally killed the American president in 1865. The real life search was encouraged by Lincoln’s Secretary Edwin Stanton, the President’s trusted person till the very end.

The script comes from the bestselling novel of the same name by James L. Swanson and it’s already not the first time when Hollywood filmmakers showed their desire to bring the book story to the screens. So yes, if you loved the Stephen King-based TV show 11.22.63 that explored JFK’s assassination, Manhunt may be your new obsession.

As one of the creators and showrunners of the new series Monica Beletsky mentioned once, this idea had been discussed by studios long before she managed to set the production.

As the official description suggests, the series will show Booth as an absolute villain who elaborated a whole crafty scheme to dispose not only of the President himself, but also of most of his cabinet members too. Thus, the show will most likely trace Booth’s story from sudden rise to quite expected fall.

As the show has only just begun airing on Apple TV — the first two episodes appeared on the platform on March 15 while the other 5 will come one by one eventually — fans can expect to see a truly star-studded cast.

Anthony Boyle — who recently starred in another Apple TV project, Masters of the Air — plays the main villain John Wilkes Booth while Hamish Linklater portrays Abraham Lincoln. The cast also includes Lovie Simone, Will Harrison, Brandon Flynn, Damian O’Hare, Glenn Morshower and many others.
