Just like Chicago Fire, Med is headed to change.

Summary:

  • Chicago Med is an NBC medical procedural drama that is a part of the One Chicago TV universe.
  • The show is going to premiere its 9th season on January 17, 2024.
  • Showrunner Andrew Schneider teases many changes, including a time jump at the very beginning of the season.

To say that NBC's fictionalized version of Chicago is going through a lot of changes this upcoming season would be an understatement.

Although all three shows within the universe, Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., will be airing shorter seasons due to scheduling challenges after the WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes in 2023, they still promise to be packed with all kinds of events.

While Chicago Fire fans are preparing to say goodbye to some of their favorites, Chicago Med fans already felt the pain of loss at the end of season 8 when Dr. Will Halstead, portrayed by Nick Gehlfuss, tendered his resignation. According to Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, that's not the only change we'll have to adjust to moving forward.

Speaking to Deadline, the show's executive producers did not hold back. Just as excited about the upcoming premiere after such a long hiatus, both Frolov and Schneider can't wait to share what the season has in store for viewers.

From all the changes that the medical staff will have to endure under the reign of the new board to the resolution of Maggie's personal drama, there is much to look forward to. Even the season premiere itself will begin on a surprising note for many viewers, and for good reason.

“Since it’s been so long since we have been in production, we decided to make that part of a timeline. We didn’t think it was realistic to jump back right after the finale. So this premiere takes place six months after the finale,” Schneider teased in the interview.

This six-month time jump will not only make the audience feel closer to the story, as it will take place in a real timeline, but it will also help to move the plot forward. After all, many changes will have been implemented within a few months, and the audience will be the judge of how efficient they were, both from the profitability and medical care side.

Besides, if Archer's estranged son Sean, who made his debut earlier this season, manages to stay clean, they will be able to proceed with the transplant. And if not... well, we're sure to see the emotional outburst that follows.

If season 9 of Chicago Med sounds right up your alley, be sure to tune in to NBC for the premiere. The first episode will air on January 17, 2024 at 8 pm ET.
