The show has just debuted its new third season with A Song of Ice and Fire’s author starring in a minor role.

Having spent more than a decade working on A Song of Ice and Fire’s two final chapters, George Martin isn’t a stranger to harsh backlash when it comes to criticising his slow-paced work mode.

In fact, things got so complicated with the whole matter that the writer himself revealed several months ago he had doubts on whether he would be able to finish his feature book series at all; he took his words back afterwards though, stating that he was now determined to finish the story no matter what.

As years pass by, Martin’s uninspiring updates on the last two novels became some sort of a meme now kept alive thanks to other TV shows, in one of which the writer recently starred in a cameo role.

George Martin’s Book Delays Are Referenced by Robert Redford in Dark Winds Season 3

Dark Winds’ long-awaited third season, which premiered with its first episode on March 9, came with another big surprise as viewers weren’t expecting to see George Martin and Robert Redford in cameo roles during a short scene in episode 1.

The two appear on the screen right after Leaphorn and Chee, not having found George Bowlegs in his father’s house, decide to go back to the station where two men are seen playing chess.

They’re none other than Martin and Redford, with the latter first patiently waiting for his opponent to make the next move and then saying “George, the whole world's waiting”. The scene wrapped before many could have realised that Redford’s line was very much real-life-like and subtly referenced Martin’s constant delay of The Winds of Winter.

George Martin Shared an Update on The Winds of Winter Just Several Days Ago

Despite having previously stated he would very likely give up on A Song of Ice and Fire’s remaining parts, the author has seemingly changed his mind.

In a recent interview with Collider, Martin revealed he was determined to finish the series despite another wave of backlash he might receive upon the books’ release.

“There's always the books, and I'm aware of that people think that— But no, I have to get back. I have to finish the books. That's the one thing I'm completely in control of. There's no budget limitations. There's no other executives on the studio side that I have to please, or other writers with different views. The books are what I'm going to make them. And, I think the one I'm writing is coming pretty well, but I wish it would come faster”, the writer said.
