Angel star, David Boreanaz, explains why the reboot would be unlikely.

Playing a somewhat conflicted role of vampire with a soul who fights the forces of evil, David Boreanaz made a huge contribution to the success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The undeniable chemistry between him and Sarah Michelle Gellar and their characters in the show fueled the audience's interest towards the show and opened the door for the spinoff starring Boreanaz. The spinoff titled Angel debuted in 1999 and was canceled after season 5.

Angel both continued and expanded the Buffyverse drawing many fans to the show and its star actor. After the show's cancellation, Boreanaz didn't lose his army of fans who continued to follow his long career on the small screen. Boreanaz has played Seeley Booth on the Fox procedural Bones, led the long-running series SEAL Team, and even parodied himself on Family Guy.

In his interview with PopCulture.com to promote the new season of SEAL Team, Boreanaz revealed the reason why he felt reluctant to revisit his old characters. The actor made it clear that he is far more interested in moving forward and not looking back when it comes to his career.

"I always maintain that I'm always in the now. And for me, it's really about this show right now and the success that it can have on Paramount+. So I'm busy just working in the now," Boreanaz said.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer helped to define the 1990s and became one of the most iconic series of all time. So the wish to revive it and its spinoff is only natural. But the fans of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer seem to agree with David Boreanaz that it might be best to leave both shows in the past. A new reboot would inevitably be compared to the iconic original, to its detriment. Two failed attempts to revive Buffy confirm this fact. The first attempt was a feature film rumored to cast Vanessa Hudgens as a lead star. It was canceled before even being produced. More recently, a television reboot that would have existed in the Buffyverse similarly went nowhere.

True Blood Reboot Update: Is the New Series Still Happening?

Of course, that's not an excuse to never go back to the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel again, there is certainly enough interesting stuff in the comic canon beloved by fans. But that's definitely a reason to proceed with caution.
