Two of the most successful vampire franchises of the past few decades, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, sated the craving for vampires for the general populace for quite some time.

But now it's been rekindled, and we're here to remind you why the latter is better than the former.

If we try to sum it up, then The Vampire Diaries simply had much more time to properly flesh out the world that the characters exist in and give us more insight into them.

Their motivations are understandable and seem valid, no matter how deranged they are, because we have context behind them that has been built up throughout the seasons. The romance seems more realistic because it didn't have to be rushed and was allowed to evolve into something complex, along with anyone participating in it.

The lore itself has more merit and substance than what we see in Twilight, has fewer plot holes that need to be avoided if you want to fully enjoy the story, and paints a more vivid and grounded picture. The show feels like it takes itself seriously and develops all of its aspects according to that. That doesn't mean that Twilight is unenjoyable, though.
