At a crucial moment, Tyrion Lannister gave the worst possible advice to his Queen — who doomed herself by trusting her already-declining advisor’s judgment.

Summary:

  • When Daenerys Targaryen first arrived in Westeros, she wanted to immediately attack King’s Landing.
  • Tyrion Lannister, her trusted advisor, talked her out of it and had her attack the useless Casterly Rock, instead.
  • If Daenerys’ army had come to King’s Landing, Cersei would have been swiftly defeated, allowing Dany to focus on the Northern threat.

Political intrigues, betrayals, power struggles, and impending doom — such was the leitmotif of Game of Thrones. All of these things led to constant wars; and all the wars led to more intrigues, betrayals, and power struggles… You get the picture.

Daenerys Targaryen was once in a perfect position to end the wars in Westeros with one quick, decisive attack. This is not even an exaggeration. Unfortunately, she still trusted Tyrion Lannister’s advice at that point — and his advice doomed her.

Daenerys Could Defeat Cersei on the Spot

When Daenerys Targaryen’s army finally crossed the Narrow Sea, she wanted to attack King’s Landing immediately, and it made perfect sense. At the time, her forces were virtually intact: she had her Dothraki horde, the Unsullied, the Second Sons, her three dragons, a huge fleet — and the Tyrells, Martells, and Greyjoys’ support.

She was in the unique position where to end the war, all she had to do was to lay siege to King’s Landing. Cersei Lannister was borderline defenseless as she didn’t have her Scorpions, Golden Company, and Euron’s fleet… The capital of the Seven Kingdoms was Dany’s for the taking. By quickly establishing her rule, she would have had no enemies in the South to worry about as she marched North.

What a picture-perfect scenario, right? It would have been such a shame if someone’s utterly stupid advice made Daenerys change her mind about it…

Tyrion Convinced Daenerys to Turn Back

Unfortunately, Tyrion Lannister, Dany’s trusted advisor has already gone completely off the rails by that time (blame his severe lead poisoning) — and his Queen still trusted him all too much. Instead of seeing the reason in Daenerys’ desire to go to King’s Landing immediately, he actively tried to talk her out of such a maneuver.

Tyrion was already stupid but still convincing. Daenerys left the King’s Landing area, went off, and attacked Casterly Rock which had exactly zero strategic value to her. You know exactly what happened next: the suicidal trip to the Far North, the Long Night, the Bells… All of that would have been easily avoided if Tyrion could just shut up — or if Daenerys could doubt her trusted advisor’s words at that point.
