German Series With 100% on RT & Dark Vibes Is Netflix's Biggest Hidden Gem Right Now
If you missed this show, it's time to correct that mistake.
Only eight years have passed since the premiere of Dark, but it has already taken its place in the lists of the best sci-fi series ever. The plot of this show is a time loop that can be unwound endlessly.
However, all of Dark's numerous plot threads were so intricately connected that this confusion did not become a burden, but rather a motivation for viewers to wait for the finale and finally put the whole puzzle together.
Dark was the first German original series on Netflix. This list was continued with a show from the creators of Dark – 1899. Continuing the traditions of the pioneer, this project also turned out to be an intricate sci-fi with an intriguing plot.
A year after 1899, in 2023, another German project was released on Netflix, which for inexplicable reasons passed by most viewers. Dear Child has 100% Rotten Tomatoes, and this time it is not sci-fi, but a thriller that also has echoes of Dark.
What Is Dear Child About?
A woman named Lena and her daughter Hannah are in the hands of a kidnapper who has strict control over their lives. One day they get lucky – the woman and the girl escape, but during the escape Lena is hit by a car, which lands her in a hospital bed.
The case manager, Inspector Buhling, realizes that Lena could be the woman whose disappearance he investigated 13 years ago. That case was never solved, and the man immediately contacts the kidnapped girl's parents.
It turns out that Lena and Hannah are not the only ones in captivity: a boy named Jonathan remains in the hands of the kidnapper, and getting to the control freak's hideout will not be easy.
Dark started out as a detective show about missing children – only later did it turn into a wildly twisted sci-fi story. Dear Child stays true to the initial storyline – all six episodes will have viewers trying to figure out what really happened to Lena.
When Lena's father comes to see her in the hospital, he assures that the woman lying on the hospital bed is not his daughter at all. But Hannah is incredibly reminiscent of Lena as a child.
Dear Child Is Based on an Outstanding Bestselling Novel
Dear Child is based on a brilliant original source – the novel of the same name by Romy Hausmann. Published in 2019, the book received rave reviews from critics and became a bestseller.
So why did everyone like Hausmann's thriller so much? The author masterfully plays on parental feelings: anyone who has a child knows how unbearable it is to imagine that this still inexperienced person will suddenly end up in someone's unreliable hands.
The series does not lose a drop of this tension – Dear Child takes the viewer into a whirlwind of mysteries and clues that will not let go for all six episodes.
An exciting plot and several twists that change the whole situation – what more do you need for a successful Netflix project that will keep you hooked for several evenings?
