Toxic masculinity must finally go.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is a procedural medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes and broadcast on ABC since 2004.
  • The majority of the characters are praised for being interesting and complex, with ever-changing views of the world.
  • However, Owen Hunt is considered by fans to be the worst main character with no character growth or development.

If there's one character in Grey's Anatomy that pretty much everyone in the fandom hates equally, it's Owen Hunt. He's played by Kevin McKidd, and he's a Chief of Trauma Surgery, who’s known for his traumatic past as a military surgeon during his service time in Iraq.

Although the traumatic events of his past would explain many of his actions and traits, Owen seems to suffer the most from the victim complex. He can't really have successful relationships with women, he lashes out at the most unacceptable times, and he makes bad decisions, but he always finds a way to portray himself as a victim.

From Cristina to Amelia to Teddy, Owen has always found himself in the worst possible romantic situations. And as much as the show wanted viewers to empathize with him, more often than not, these situations were the result of his own actions or thinking.

Enough is enough, the fans believe. If we are all going to see more of Owen Hunt in the upcoming season 20 of Grey's Anatomy, there is only one storyline that everyone wants to see him go through. A slow, steady, and strictly professional relationship with a good therapist who will help him get his life back together.

While some fans think that there is already a perfect love match for Owen on the show, and that is Teddy Altman, who is now his wife, others think that even Teddy deserves much more.

Although she was the one who was deeply in love with Hunt for many years, he didn't return her feelings for a long time. Also, considering that Teddy also served in Iraq, it's hard to say how much of their bond is actually rooted in trauma rather than true feelings for each other.

After so many years on television, Shonda Rhimes has proven her ability to create complex and multi-dimensional female characters who are not afraid to face their problems and responsibilities. Owen Hunt, however, remains one of the constant reminders that writers struggle to do the same for male characters.

Mark March 14, 2024 on your calendars, for this is when Grey's Anatomy Season 20 premieres on ABC. And if you feel the urge to go back to earlier seasons, you can stream the show on Hulu or Netflix.
