HBO's Dunk & Egg Series Is Falling for the Good Old Game of Thrones Mistake

George Martin ’s fictional universe absolutely enchanted millions of people all over the world immediately after Game of Thrones’ premiere, and to this day, HBO is actively trying to spawn more prequel and spin-off shows. That’s great fun, especially since there are countless untold (or unadapted) stories in the world of Ice and Fire…

But after fixing one major Game of Thrones issue with the first prequel, House of the Dragon, HBO might be falling for the same mistake with The Hedge Knight.

Dunk & Egg Has Limited Source Material

Game of Thrones was at its peak when the TV show was based on George Martin’s already written novels — and quickly fell off when the source material ended. The finale of Game of Thrones is widely regarded as one of the most disastrous and underwhelming TV show finales ever, all thanks to the lack of source material.

The upcoming The Hedge Knight series is seemingly falling for the same trap. Currently, George Martin only has three Dunk & Egg stories written which is nowhere near enough to create a full-blown show solely off of them — and new stories aren’t likely to be published before The Winds of Winter. According to most fans, this means never, so Dunk & Egg might be in an even darker place than ASoIaF itself.

Dunk & Egg Has a Unique Advantage

Running out of source material quickly is inevitable for The Hedge Knight TV show, and HBO should work incredibly carefully to ensure they can create compelling enough stories and not repeat the same sins they were crucified for after the Game of Thrones finale. But while that doesn’t sound promising, there is a silver lining here.

Unlike the Game of Thrones characters, Dunk & Egg are both historical personas in the world of Ice and Fire. We know a decent chunk of information about their latter years when Egg is already a King and Dunk is his Commander of the Kingsguard. This gives us some hope that, with something to go off of both in the past and the future, The Hedge Knight writers will be able to write believable Dunk & Egg stories.
