Guy Ritchie’s new MVP stars in a failed spy flick, now hyping on streaming.

Summary:

  • Apple TV ’s Global Top is dominated by an action movie, starring Henry Cavill.
  • It follows a writer working on her spy novel series, who becomes entangled in a showdown of the secret agents.
  • The movie was destroyed by the audience for its plain development and twists.

It seems that Henry Cavill’s action era is only gaining momentum, though he became famous as a great actor of the genre since The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) and Mission: ImpossibleFallout ( 2018). His continuing collaboration with Guy Ritchie for the recently released The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and for the upcoming action In the Grey draws even more attention to his figure.

Disappointingly, there is an action flick which didn’t manage to reveal Cavill’s full potential, as it remained hidden behind the movie’s controversy. Its plot initially seems to be centered on Cavill’s stately action hero, a spy on his most spiest mission ever.

However, he is only a character in the book by Elly Conway, a novelist, who has almost finished her fifth book of the series following the adventures of Cavill’s hero. The events described by the writer in her novels surprisingly match several real spy missions, which makes the secret agency suggest she’s involved in a macguffinish deal.

The blend of the fictional narration of the book series and the onscreen real events promises an amusing action rollercoaster. But, sadly, the movie’s creators miserably failed to mix them properly to the end, and the final twists seem to be unreasonable.

The assembling cast feels kind of wasted to take part in such a pretentious, but actually hollow spy movie. And believe us, these loud names can shock you: apart from Cavill, the film stars the acclaimed Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, let alone the remarkable cameos of Dua Lipa, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Moreover, it was directed by the creator of the Kingsman cinematic universe, Matthew Vaughn, but it’s not half as inventive and smart as Colin Firth ’s spy smash. It seems the filmmaker took a big risk in his ambition to pay more attention and money to the cast, but not to the proper screenwriting and believable action sequences.

The genre lovers can recognize here the synopsis of this year’s Argylle, which was panned by both the critics and by the public, grossing a shameful $96 million worldwide against a $200 million budget.

Nevertheless, the movie’s amazing crew makes it a curious worth-watching flick for an evening, which is proved by the current audience’s interest in it. After landing on AppleTV+ on April 12, it is now confidently dominating the platform’s global chart.

If you want to have a chill time with a cartoony star-studded action movie like The Lost City or Ghosted, stream Argylle on Apple TV+.
