Josh Brolin May Have Just Confirmed Sad Truth His Fans Are Blaming the Oscars For
The actor isn’t that happy about the Academy’s choices either.
Yesterday’s Oscar nominations’ announcement quickly went from an exciting event to yet another big scandal, and Josh Brolin is somehow involved too. The actor starred in Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious sequel to a 2021 sci-fi hit Dune, and, despite lacking major nominations in acting and directing, the movie still got several nods from the Academy, including a chance to compete for the Best Picture trophy.
However, the critics went under fire anyway when fans remembered Brolin’s threatening promise in case the Academy failed to do one specific thing.
Josh Brolin Said He’d Quit Acting if Denis Villeneuve Didn’t Get Best Director Nomination for Dune: Part 2
And it does seem like the actor was dead serious while talking about it with Variety last year. In the interview Brolin, who in both movies portrayed Paul Atreides’ mentor and friend Gurney Halleck, stated that if Villeneuve “doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting”, also adding that he felt like the second film was way better than the first one.
The actor continued gushing over Villeneuve’s work, saying “When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him”.
Academy Announcement Might Be a Bad Sign for Brolin’s Acting Future
Whether Brolin in fact predicted things or was just fooling around about his promise, the actor got into a very complicated position because of what he claimed back in November. The Academy’s announcement proved that Villeneuve hadn’t made it to being a Best Director nominee after all, which was quick to make some people recall Brolin’s words about quitting the industry.
Still, the actor didn’t go into hiding and took to Instagram, praising Dune: Part Two for mostly technical awards nominations and adding that “apparently, I am going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated”.
He then went on congratulating those crew members who had secured nominations and concluded the video saying that he was “happy to be a part of it.” It’s not clear yet whether Brolin was actually kidding about leaving the industry or not.
The Oscars will be held on March 2. The ceremony will be aired on ABC, and also be available for streaming on Hulu — for the first time ever.
