Too bad, fans didn’t like that in the slightest.

Summary:

  • Stranger Things is a hit Netflix science fiction horror that has been on the air since 2016.
  • One of the characters, Robin Buckley, was changed quite a bit throughout season 4, and fans did not appreciate the difference.
  • Turns out, the Duffer brothers wanted to make Robin closer to the actress portraying her, Maya Hawke.

If you thought that the strangest things that happen in Netflix's sci-fi horror hit would end with the plot, you would be wrong.

Throughout the past season, many fans have noticed sudden changes in the writing of some characters that they did not appreciate. Not only because of how blatant they were, but also because of how they affected the character as a whole. Unfortunately, whatever happened to Robin Buckley in season 4 seemed to ruin her for many viewers.

From the sarcastic girl with funny comments who was the perfect comedic relief in downright scary situations, Robin became much more annoying in the eyes of the audience. Her jokes became much closer to the jokes of the people she used to make fun of, and the portrayal of her suddenly awkward nature felt forced.

The reason for this was given by the Duffer Brothers themselves, but if anything, it only made the changes to the character more uncomfortable to watch.

Why Did Robin Change In Stranger Things Season 4?

As the Duffer Brothers explained to Variety, they felt that the original character they came up with for Robin didn't work out the way they wanted it to. At the same time, they were so taken with Maya Hawke's personality that they decided to base the character on her rather than come up with something new.

“She’s much more interesting than any original character we could ever make up. She’s hilarious, she’s whip-smart, she’s very honest and real, and she’s just awesomely weird, her energy some mix between a playful, excited teenager and a wizened Hollywood actor who’s seen it all,” they said.

While all the compliments for Maya Hawke's real-life personality must be true, and no one would want to doubt them, the way the changes were implemented on screen did not sit well with the audience.

Finding out that they were meant to enhance the actress' off-screen personality only made fans feel bad for all the criticism they had. So overall, the move to admit this was questionable from the showrunners to begin with. The only hope is that they will do a better job in season 5 to do justice to Hawke and bring Robin back to earth a little bit.

To see if that happens, or if she continues on the same path of change she took in season 4, be sure to keep an eye out for any news or behind-the-scenes updates on the development of Stranger Things season 5!
