Seems like Netflix has found its endless source of inspiration in the monarchy’s story.

Summary:

  • Netflix ’s big royal hit The Crown seemingly concluded the era of dwelling on royal history, but the streaming’s recent release proves there’s still a lot of demand for such stories.
  • Back in April, Netflix released a biographical drama film that stars Gillian Anderson in the role of the journalist that carried out a scandalous interview with Prince Andrew back in 2019.
  • Amidst the movie’s overall success with the audience, the streaming company seems to make a U-turn regarding The Royal Family’s story that hasn’t been adapted for the screen yet.

With the century’s biggest royal drama show The Crown ending its run back in 2023, the TV industry was surely left with no other choice but to switch its attention to something else rather than The Royal Family’s life full of its own ups and downs. This probably was accepted by many production companies, but not by Netflix.

The streaming’s Royal-ish release of last month Scoop wasn’t expected to be a hit that massive, but the movie’s results seemingly provoked a big change of plans for Netflix in the nearest years.

Starring Gillian Anderson as journalist Emily Maitlis, Scoop follows a sequence of events that led Mailtis to carrying out a scandalous and viral interview with Queen Elizabeth II’s son Prince Andrew regarding his relationships with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Scoop

Though many critics called the actual interview footage a much more compelling and deep thing to watch in this case, Scoop nonetheless garnered generally positive reviews from both critics and viewers, landing scores of 77% and 62% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively.

While the movie itself isn’t a raving success, it yet proved that the audience still craves for more stories of all kinds coming from Buckingham Palace’s closed doors. According to Netflix data (via FlixPatrol), Scoop gained about 8.5 million views in just a week of being available on the platform.

According to several insiders who spilled the tea to The Sun, Netflix is planning to go further with royal stories after Prince Andrew’s shocking interview resurfaced and got a lot of attention once again since it was initially released back in 2019.

There’s nothing confirmed about Netflix’s plans yet, including whether the streaming giant is plotting a film or rather a whole new show, but the first royal to be brought to the screen is reportedly Edward VII, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s eldest son and Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandfather.

Edward VII

Being the King of the United Kingdom from 1901 to 1910, Edward VII, also known as “Bertie”, was presumably involved in numerous scandals that eventually earned him a reputation of “a playboy prince” and “Dirty Bertie”.

Despite all the success that such dramas invariably have, the royal family’s biggest secrets being brought back to the world’s light may still cause some doubts among fans.

Given that Netflix is pretty much well known for its hunt for everyone’s attention with use of dramatical and often exaggerated elements, a new movie or show has all chances to receive the same backlash as The Crown faced back in the day for its distortion of real events.

Though there’s still a chance that the streaming will find another big win formula sometime later, Netflix’s current plans are risking to follow The Crown’s ambiguous suit.
