Netflix’s New Western Hit Still Has Nothing on Its Taylor Sheridan’s Predecessor
The former still might have its chances higher once another season is announced.
2025 has been a good time for the Western genre so far, with Netflix ’s American Primeval becoming a major hit on streaming and Kevin Costner ’s first part of the Horizon saga suddenly turning into everyone’s favorite watch on both Netflix and Max.
The former, released around a month ago, is still leading Netflix’s top charts and now has good chances to secure a couple of new seasons, yet it still has a long way to go if the show indeed aims at taking over the position of an undoubted Western hit.
Naturally, this honour currently belongs to one of Taylor Sheridan ’s extremely successful series.
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Is Still Grander Than American Primeval
Though Netflix might be in fact planning to turn American Primeval into a new potentially successful Western franchise, it’s very likely to take some time before the show reaches Yellowstone’s heights.
Despite being put to an end back in 2024, Yellowstone also started as an acclaimed series when its first season was released back in 2018, though later on spawned another four and not less captivating instalments, with Sheridan also developing two prequel shows titled 1883 and 1923 and adding them to the franchise.
Additionally, Yellowstone and its spinoffs aren’t the only Western stories Sheridan can boast of. The writer-director is currently working on 10 shows and movies expected to be released on Paramount+, which makes the latter a far stronger contender than Netflix when it comes to fascinating stories from the Wild West.
American Primeval Deserves Another Season, but It Will Be Difficult to Handle
Considering all the buzz surrounding the series, it’s safe to say Netflix is currently adding it to its list of priorities once another season is confirmed.
However, developing another pack of episodes for American Primeval will certainly become a challenging task since the first season’s finale saw many characters being killed off, thus leaving its potential continuation almost nothing to build its storyline on.
Alternatively, it’s no time to give up on American Primeval entirely either as the show could follow Sheridan’s suit and move on to several spinoffs focusing on some of the surviving characters’ stories.
It’s still unclear whether Netflix will choose one tactic or another, but the show’s raving success won’t let the viewers wait for some kind of announcement for too long anyway.
