Good thing, you don’t have to agree.

When it comes to slightly violent and dark TV dramas, no one does it quite like HBO. From the iconic The Wire, to the mafia exploration of The Sopranos, to the fantastical setting of Game of Thrones, the network knows how to keep you hooked.

However, not every TV series that is considered influential in the industry has to be loved by everyone. Varying in genre, setting, and character, some shows appeal more to certain audiences than others. Still, many people would find Quentin Tarantino 's passionate dislike of True Detective an unexpected surprise.

Why Does Quentin Tarantino Hate True Detective?

According to Tarantino's 2015 interview with Vulture, the director didn't share everyone's excitement for the show. You'd think that True Detective's anthology setup would help the cause, since season 2 hints at a whole new story, but that wasn’t the case either.

“I tried to watch the first episode of season one, and I didn’t get into it at all.<...> All these handsome actors trying to not be handsome and walking around looking like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It’s so serious, and they’re so tortured, trying to look miserable with their mustaches and grungy clothes,” the director explained.

While it's hard to argue with season 1's pacing, as everyone has a different opinion on the show's perfect dynamic, the dark and gritty atmosphere and brooding characters that Tarantino seems to dislike are exactly what draws in the majority of viewers and builds the universe on screen.

Led by Matthew McConaughey in season 1 and Colin Farrell in season 2, the 8.9/10 IMDB-rated story is created as an anthology series, following different teams and different investigations each season. It has been popular with both critics and viewers for all of its 5 seasons and is currently being renewed for another.

However, not to stay too negative, the director described the HBO show that he actually loved, despite many critical reviews, and it was Aaron Sorokin's The Newsroom. So if you share Tarantino's taste in television and find yourself bored by True Detective, this hectic political drama might be right up your alley.
