Who said that sitcoms cannot break your heart sometimes?

One doesn't usually watch The Big Bang Theory to get all tearful, but there is one episode that always gets fans straight to their hearts.

In the Big Bang Theory subreddit, when fans discussed the saddest moments of the series, pretty much everyone brought up season 8 episode 15 titled The Comic Book Regeneration. This was the episode when Howard had to learn that his mother passed away in a phone call with his aunt.

The decision to kill off Howard's mom was prompted by sad circumstances from the real life that inevitably interfered with the actual show. The actress who portrayed her, Carol Ann Susi, died in real life in November 2014 after battling cancer.

The death came off as a shock to both the characters and the viewers, marking The Big Bang Theory's saddest episode. The fact that Howard's mom's death was so painfully connected with the real life made it even tougher for many fans.

"I always skip those episodes. They are really well made, and that's why they hurt. The one with the last meal she made is tough as well," Redditor MerryBandOfPirates said.

Others were particularly touched by how Sheldon – who is not usually overly delicate and subtle – reacted to Howard mom's death and supported him

"I especially loved what Sheldon had to say. Everyone expected him to make some kind of oddball and out of place remark, but he turns around and let's Howard know that he and their friends are there to offer their support," Redditor dragonsrawesomesauce noted.

The Big Bang Theory has provided plenty of emotional and touching moments alongside the funny ones as it aired on CBS from 2007 to 2019 for 12 seasons. Now, the beloved universe continues in its prequel, Young Sheldon, currently in its sixth season.
