And now the trend is making its comeback to the masses.

Summary:

  • The Big Bang Theory was one of the most popular CBS sitcoms, airing from 20017 to 2019.
  • One of the leading characters, Sheldon Cooper, was portrayed by Jim Parsons.
  • Sheldon’s signature look of wearing a t-shirt over a long-sleeved top was inspired by Parsons’ audition look.

It is not uncommon for popular TV series to dictate the new fashion trends among their audiences. Since the 60s, audiences have picked up on the styles worn by their favorite characters and tried to copy them, hoping to achieve the same cool look. This trend has continued into modern times.

From women copying Jennifer Aniston 's looks after the runaway success of Friends to every teen and young adult adding tons of glitter to their faces after watching Euphoria. The influence of TV fashion is undeniable to this day. However, not every show that has a strong distinctive style character becomes trendy.

One of the most popular TV shows that is easily recognizable by the outfits of its main characters is The Big Bang Theory.

However, out of all the looks that the characters have served throughout the show, it's only Sheldon Cooper's quirky shirts that have made it into the masses. For some reason, Howard's tight pants with tucked-in shirts were not as popular. And even when it comes to Sheldon, not every part of his outfits is usually copied.

For example, many people skip the long sleeves under the T-shirts. However, this is part of the character's signature look, and for a good reason.

Why Does Sheldon Wear T-shirts With Undershirt?

The signature look was essential for a strong character like Sheldon. While he would likely still be recognized by Jim Parsons' brilliant portrayal of the character's mannerisms and sarcastic comments, the look is definitely what makes the image of Sheldon Cooper complete in everyone's mind.

As good a job as the costume department has done on the set of The Big Bang Theory, there is one important part of Sheldon's appearance that the actor himself should take credit for. That part is the very undershirt that originated as a piece at his audition.

In Jessica Radloff's book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series. As it turned out, the long-sleeved undershirt was thrown in as a decorative detail to sell his appearance.

“I wore some sort of blue Izod or Polo shirt with a long-sleeve, pale blue shirt underneath it because I had an actor friend who always said make sure you wear something blue for your eyes. So the undershirt under the main shirt came from me,” he stated.

According to casting director Nikki Valko, it wasn't the shirt that helped Jim Parsons get the part, but his talent and remarkable delivery. They knew they had their Sheldon right away, and now that we're still enjoying Parsons' narration for Young Sheldon many years later, it's safe to say it was the right choice.

Also, the double shirt look has certainly made a comeback in recent years. With the Y2K style back in vogue, it's very easy to meet someone rocking layers like this on the street today, so if you're particularly interested in copying Sheldon Cooper's look, you can now do it in style. Just be sure to buy a shirt two sizes larger than you actually need.

And if it's not the clothes you're nostalgic for, but the hilarious dialogue and brilliant jokes of The Big Bang Theory, you can always re-watch it on Netflix or MAX.
