The first trailer for the third and sadly final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch has finally arrived, giving fans a release date and a brief glimpse of what to expect in the final chapter of Clone Force 99's adventures.

What fans were not expecting, however, was a surprise appearance by a familiar face they have come to know and love over the course of The Clone Wars animated series, which ran from 2008 to 2020.

Asajj Ventress Somehow Returns From Beyond The Grave

Asajj Ventress, who was an apprentice to Count Dooku, played a huge role in the story of The Clone Wars, from being a secondary villain for a good half of the show's run to being betrayed by her Sith master and choosing her own path, balancing between the light and the dark.

The last time we saw her on screen, however, was over a decade ago in The Clone Wars season 5 finale, released on March 2, 2013, during a storyline in which Ahsoka Tano was falsely accused of being responsible for the attack on the Jedi Temple.

After helping the rogue Padawan, the former Sith was eventually confronted by Anakin Skywalker and provided the crucial clue that helped him uncover the true villain who was trying to frame both Ahsoka and Ventress.

Since then, many fans of the series have wondered why Asajj hasn't been seen in other movies and shows, but her story didn't end there and continued in the books, reaching its conclusion in the 2015 canon novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden.

There, she teamed up with Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos to help him assassinate her former master, Count Dooku, but as the two worked together on their lengthy mission, they began to develop feelings for each other.

Of course, their attempt proved futile, resulting in Ventress, who had by then returned to the Light Side, saving her lover from Dooku's Force lightning at the cost of her own life, and then being buried on her homeworld of Dathomir.

Fans Compare This Retcon To An Infamous Superhero Cliché

Since the book left no doubt that she died before the events of Episode III, her appearance in the upcoming third season of The Bad Batch, which takes place after Order 66, makes it crystal clear that her fate has been retconned.

However, it should be pointed out that the press release states that the story of season 3 will "align" with the events of Dark Disciple, so apparently it doesn't make the entire book non-canon and only changes the finale.

Fans are already comparing it to Palpatine's return in Episode IX, suspecting that the show will simply reveal that she faked her death, and while they are excited to see her again, not everyone is a fan of such a twist.

They say it just makes Star Wars more like the superhero comic books that have become infamous for this, as apparently the deaths of characters are now completely meaningless and they can return at any time.

Either way, it won't be long before we learn the secret behind their miraculous return from beyond the grave, as the first three episodes of The Bad Batch's final season premiere on February 21.
