The famous horror director is ready to bring King's cult work back to life.

The Dark Tower series of novels written by Stephen King tells of the adventures of Roland Deschain, who is searching for a way to the Dark Tower – the center of the universe, which protects it from darkness and destruction.

During his perilous journey, the character finds true friends from different worlds. His goal is to climb to the top of the tower and restore order to the world.

It was long believed that The Dark Tower would be impossible to bring to the big screen. The narrative is non-linear, with too many characters and too much scope for the story.

But the same was said about The Lord of the Rings and Dune, so in 2017 the project of director Nikolaj Arcel was released and ... failed catastrophically.

The worst fears of the fans came true – the movie became a superficial retelling of events from different parts of the books.

The main drawback was too much unexplained information and an attempt to show the whole huge world of the Dark Tower at once, without focusing on any component, instead of gradually revealing it.

Many believed that such a failure buried the prospects for the development of the franchise, but then it became known that director Mike Flanagan was planning to make the adaptation in the form of a series.

The director called The Dark Tower the project of his dreams and said that the series will consist of five seasons. In addition, he would like to make two more feature films after the series is finished.

Recently, it became known that King himself had approved the project, as he announced on his Twitter account: "The writer happens to agree."

Flanagan also sent King a detailed script for the pilot episode, which was also approved by the writer.

Mike Flanagan has already worked on the adaptation of King's works – in 2017 he filmed the drama Gerald's Game, and in 2019 – Doctor Sleep.

Both projects received positive reviews from critics and viewers. Flanagan is best known for directing the horror movie Oculus and the horror series Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
