They shamelessly did it too many times.

Supernatural has taken its viewers on a rollercoaster ride throughout its 15-season run. Full of demons, angels, monsters, and most of all, the complex bond between the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, the show has delivered a fair share of intense emotions and heartbreaking moments.

Here are five of the most gut-wrenching times when Sam and Dean's struggles and sacrifices brought tears to our eyes.

5. Sam’s First Death

In the season 2 finale, All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2, Sam faces a tragic death when he is fatally stabbed by Jake Talley. This emotional moment marks Sam's first death on the show and is followed by a poignant monologue from Dean, in which he expresses his feelings of failure in protecting his baby brother.

Every time this scene breaks our hearts even more when Dean decides to sacrifice his own soul to bring Sam back to life.

4. John Trades His Life For Dean’s

In Season 2's In My Time of Dying, Dean is faced with a life-threatening injury after the three Winchesters get in a car accident. In a desperate move, John Winchester makes a deal with a yellow-eyed Azazel to save Dean's life, sacrificing his own instead.

After Dean's resurrection, John sees him briefly before he dies, providing one of the most emotional scenes in the series.

3. Dean Tells About Hell

After his resurrection in Season 4, Dean carries the traumatic memories of his time in Hell with him. In the episode Heaven and Hell, Dean finally opens up to Sam about the horrible experiences he went through, revealing that it felt like forty years to him, with thirty years of torture and ten years of torturing others.

Dean's emotional breakdown and the raw pain in his eyes during this scene still affect fans in a deep way.

2. Sam Kills Rowena

Over the course of the series, fans have come to believe in Rowena's unconditional love for the boys, especially Sam, which is why she chooses to be killed by him. In a poignant and heartbreaking scene, Rowena willingly allows Sam to kill her as part of the spell, as this act of self-sacrifice is intended to strengthen the spell and give the Winchesters and their allies the means to confront and defeat God.

1. The Entire Finale Episode

The series finale, titled Carry On, summed up the emotional journey of Sam and Dean Winchester and broke the hearts of fans into a million pieces.

With Dean's death, which lasted almost ten minutes, Sam's "normal life" but now without his brother, and the reunion of the Winchester brothers in heaven, dressed in their original Pilot outfits — the episode marked the end of an era for the fans and made them drown in their own tears for 40 minutes straight.
