Supernatural Star Jensen Ackles Almost Played Deadpool Instead of Ryan Reynolds
It’s virtually impossible to imagine anyone else playing Deadpool now, but admittedly, he could’ve had those Soldier Boy vibes if Jensen Ackles hadn’t rejected the offer.
Jensen Ackles was launched into international stardom with his hit series Supernatural where he played Dean Winchester, one of the two brothers on the hunt for things that shouldn’t roam the Earth. Many seasons later, despite his popularity at the time, Ackles almost vanished after the finale of Supernatural, to everyone’s surprise.
However, the actor recently resurfaced in Season 3 of The Boys, a famous series making fun of classic superhero tropes and ridiculing DC and Marvel.
Jensen Ackles assumed the role of Soldier Boy, the embodiment of “in reality, when they revived Captain America, he should’ve been intolerant like most people back in his time.”
And it’s quite funny that these days, Ackles is the one to mock Marvel as Soldier Boy, because once, the actor almost became part of the MCU himself: apparently, he almost bagged the role of Deadpool and only backed out of it because he was busy with another project. You heard it right: Ryan Reynolds was not the first pick!
"I wasn't available, so the train just kind of stopped there. But, had I been available, I would've had to jump through the studio hoops and jump through the producer hoops… But I had a really good shot, and it's a movie that I really, really like, Deadpool," Ackles revealed during an SPNPHX panel.
In the end, the Supernatural star was glad that he’d passed on the role. Ackles later learned that if he were to assume the role of the Merc with the Mouth, his romantic partner would’ve been his ex-girlfriend, Morena Baccarin, who played Vanessa.
"It was probably a good thing because my ex-girlfriend was on there, and so that probably would have been awkward. So it probably worked out for the best… <...> I probably would've messed that up for a lot of people had I been a part of it, so probably best I didn't. But that would've been cool,” the actor concluded.
We still can’t quite wrap our heads around the fact that Jensen Ackles could’ve been part of the MCU instead of mocking it with The Boys right now… But honestly, the thought of Ryan Reynolds playing Soldier Boy is even weirder, so let’s drop that.
