Sam and Dean Winchesters’ redemption club.

Summary:

  • Supernatural was The CW's hit television series that followed Sam and Dean Winchesters on their journey of fighting demons across the country.
  • Two of the show's most popular antagonists were Rowena and Crowley, who happened to be a mother and son duo.
  • Despite not having much in common, the two were united by the reluctant arc of redemption.

If there's one thing that Supernatural clearly lacked, it was a parent-child bond. Though the Winchester brothers had their own mother and father figures, found throughout the show in people they met, their real parents were far from perfect, to say the least.

As angry as viewers still are with Mary and John, there was another iconic mother character in Supernatural who may not have been a great parent, but was a highly entertaining presence and a very well thought out antagonist for the Winchesters to fight, Rowena MacLeod.

As much as she and her son, Crowley, fought, they had more in common than one might think.

While Rowena shamelessly manipulated him and caused him much pain, Crowley took the best of his mother. The sarcasm, the darkest sense of humor, and a complete loss of all evil qualities when it came to the Winchester brothers.

Did Rowena Have a Redemption Arc in Supernatural?

The funniest thing that happened on Supernatural is the way Dean and Sam were able to not only fight demons, but influence them to become better, even though they were clearly reluctant to do so.

While the Winchesters have never been the best examples of peaceful people, their presence must have had some effect, as both Crowley and Rowena faced the same fate.

When he first appeared on the show, Crowley quickly became a fan favorite due to his sarcastic personality and gray morality. His development has been very slow, but prominent, as viewers have grown to truly care about him and the way he interacts with Sam and Dean, as well as Cas.

While Crowley's redemption arc was more devastating and ended in his tragic sacrifice for the greater good, Rowena had more luck and proved to be more resourceful. She had a similarly sacrificial end to her life, only to return in season 15 as the Queen of Hell, which was the most fitting title for her all along.

Despite the title, she managed to retain the same warm feelings for her friends, even using the example of her own mistakes with Crowley to guide them for good. Though her son wasn't there to witness this development, it remains one of the fan-favorite moments the two share spiritually.

If you are feeling nostalgic and want to watch Supernatural from the beginning, you can stream the show on Netflix.
