The Winchesters didn’t survive past season 1, but we actually have its predecessor to blame.

The Winchesters, a spinoff series that followed Dean and Sam’s parents as they hunt monsters in the 1970s, premiered in October 2022 and was canceled in May 2023. After a month-long battle (led by Jensen Ackles himself) to find a new home for the show, the fandom has finally given up.

Why was the series canceled though? The official reason is low ratings, but that’s not all there is to it. The Winchesters was doomed to fail right from the start for the most ridiculous, yet logical reason ever.

The supernatural drama’s season 1 focused mainly on the Monster Club trying to take down the Akrida, which are supposed to be these powerful beings that would start the apocalypse in case God fails. Chuck certainly lost it if he thought that these creatures were a match for a group of 20-year-old hunters with virtually no experience.

The Winchesters’ creators picked the worst villains for the season and suffered the consequences. The Akrida are literally giant bugs that can possess people. That’s it. Remember the last time we cringed this hard? That’s right, back in 2005, when Supernatural’s infamous episode Bugs aired.

We didn’t like insect-related horror then, and we didn’t come to like it 17 years later. Bugs aren’t terrifying, they are just gross and laughable at best. That episode has since become an inside joke in the Supernatural fandom. Whenever someone asks you what the worst episode of Supernatural is, your mind immediately goes to Bugs.

So why Robbie Thompson thought that he could build an entire season around insectoid monsters and get away with it is truly beyond us. With that storyline, there was no chance in hell of us getting hooked on the show.

Although we do have to give props to the showrunner for one thing – he did come up with the appropriately ridiculous idea of how to defeat the Akrida. Killing them by running the Queen over with Dean’s Baby is *chef’s kiss*. Yes, it is as absurd as it sounds.

Well, let’s hope that Supernatural’s legacy doesn’t end with The Winchesters. Maybe the next spinoff will manage to live up to everyone’s expectations!
