Fans are thrilled with the 'Love and Thunder' director's new take on the hackneyed conventions of sci-fi opera.

Taika Waititi recently confirmed that his next directorial project will be a secret 'Star Wars ' movie, with a script already being developed. So far, little is known about the synopsis, characters or even the setting, but given Waititi's impeccable directing output, even the most reluctant fandom members were confident that the New Zealander would make a decent movie. And now, thanks to Waititi's recent comments, it looks like the upcoming film will not only be interesting as a piece of entertainment, but will probably fix Disney 's biggest mistake – not expanding the 'Star Wars' universe, focusing instead on already familiar characters.

In a conversation with Total Film, Waititi detailed his views on how the universe created by George Lucas should adapt to modern times, discarding old stories in favor of new and original ones.

"Look, I think for the 'Star Wars' universe to expand, it has to expand. I don't think that I'm any use in the 'Star Wars' universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story," Waititi said.

And fans are more than happy to hear that. After Disney+ acquired the rights to 'Star Wars', the franchise faced a serious creative problem: almost all of the projects focused on previously known characters and events.

"Period! Star Wars is so boring because every movie and show they make is related to something old, stop making prequels and stop making movies/shows about existing characters parents/sons/uncles," – @CristyKatt.

Fans are certainly eager to finally get a new and exciting page of 'Star Wars' history, without Yoda, Darth Vader or Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"I have full faith in Taika Waititi’s vision for his Star Wars movie & im relieved that it’s focusing on all new characters like with Rogue One & I hope Patty Jenkins will do the same thing with Rogue Squadron! Let’s focus on the future not the past of this franchises from now on!" – @supermangeek101.
