The new season of The White Lotus does a much better job of portraying non-romantic relationships and how unhealthy they can be — particularly in the example of this trio.

The White Lotus season 3 was one of the most anticipated comebacks of the year, and it's safe to say that the first episodes didn't fail to meet the expectations of the many fans (well, except for the intro song). It's still full of suspense, sinister noises, greedy characters, toxic "love" stories, and hidden agendas.

But what makes this season a real standout is the deeper exploration of a trio's friendship, which is always so much more complicated than a duo dynamic. One of the main groups is that of Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate. The three middle-aged but good-looking women came to Thailand to spend some time together. They are high school friends who used to be close, but life got in the way.

At first glance, we may not realize that they are not really friends at all, but rather competitive frenemies. But the first big scene with the three of them shows how fake they are with each other. Jaclyn is a rich TV star who actually paid for the trip, so her two friends are trying to make up for it by constantly complimenting her. But the dynamics in their friend group changes from episode to episode.

Laurie’s Outburst

The next important scene with them is the one where Kate and Jaclyn badmouth their third friend under the pretense of being concerned about her. When Laurie heard this, she went back to her room and started sobbing loudly.

Many fans thought her reaction said a lot about her personality, but they couldn't decide what it was. While some said it was her reaction to her girls saying things about her, we think this is a more accurate analysis.

“It’s not a response to seeing/hearing her friends talk about her. I think she’s reckoning with something within herself. Perhaps recognizing that these lifelong friends are phony, or at the very least, that she no longer fits in. It seems like she’s acting out a feeling of loneliness, not reacting or responding to the other two,” Redditor akg7915 said.

Jaclyn’s “Meh” Reaction

In the next episode, the one under the whispering attack was Jaclyn. Kate and Laurie started talking about how she was always mentioning her husband and how happy they were. But the women thought that there was nothing to be proud of, and that the whole thing was probably exaggerated.

The next topic on the agenda was Jaclyn’s face and body. They are just sure that she is doing something to look so good. The whole situation is not good-looking, but Jaclyn’s reaction at the moment she realised she was being discussed was excellent, and frankly quite relatable.

“She kinda shrugs it off and even somewhat smirks about the prospect of the two gossiping about her which leans into the vanity/narcissism that the other two accuse her of. It’s possible that part of her enjoys the fact that the other two are talking about her,” Redditor hiponcronus said.

With her reaction she showed that she is above all the gossip and maybe she doesn't care about the opinion of her "best friends" at all. And all the appreciation is just a form of being polite to another suck-up, of which there are many in her life.

Kate’s Breakdown

Episode 3, however, had just made a huge revelation about the personality of the last group member. When the dynamic shifted again and Kate became the one being talked about, we got the scene where she discovers this. But her reaction is nothing like the previous two. She actually seemed the most concerned and absolutely shocked by the mere fact that they were talking about her.

“She looks worried that her friends view her as something other than the image she’s crafted for them because she’s the one who’s always used to putting up a fake front/image. When she leaves, you see her likely trying to think of ways to correct this,” Redditor hiponcronus said.

What’s the Meaning?

The White Lotus uses the complex dynamics of a toxic friendship to show how superficial bonds built on fragile foundations can be. What makes this trio's friendship so unhealthy isn't a few petty disagreements, but the way they use each other as stepping stones to boost their own egos.

Through Kate, Jaclyn, and Laurie the show highlights the danger of letting superficial dynamics define our closest relationships. Their “friendship” is not about supporting each other, but about maintaining a sense of control and validation in an environment where status is everything.

Besides, it is yet another contribution to The White Lotus’ library of toxic friendships. In season 1, we had a weird duo of Olivia and her “token” friend Paula; in season 2, it was about Cameron and Ethan’s muscle/power play. Now, we have a new twist on problematic non-romantic relationships; and it’s really refreshing to see that The White Lotus doesn’t restrict itself to love dramas exclusively.
