A show where a successful career woman adopts a human as her pet. And no, this isn't some bizarre Black Mirror episode. It's the premise of one of the most charming doramas ever made.

I talk about remakes a lot. The thing about them is that they often attempt to recreate something that's already been done before and done good. And I genuinely don't understand the point of trying to reinvent the wheel. Yet I have to admit that some remakes are actually not that bad and can even be better than the original.

That's why when I heard about the remake of one of my all-time favorite doramas way back in 2017, I was cautious but secretly very excited. However, this time around, my intuition was right: the original cannot be overshadowed.

And while the new version wasn't a total letdown, it made me realize why the 2003 original still holds such a special place in my heart.

You're My Pet (2003) Is The Most Delightfully Bizarre Love Story I've Ever Watched

But before I get into the series itself, I feel like I have to mention that the early 2000s dramas weren't afraid to be different. They weren't trying to fit into some algorithm-friendly box or appeal to every possible demographic. They were weird and wholly authentic. And You're My Pet embodies this spirit perfectly.

The premise of You're My Pet is absolutely wild, I know, but bear with me. The story follows Sumire, a career-driven woman who's killing it in the fashion industry but struggling with relationships. One day she finds Momo, a talented dancer who's basically homeless and decides to take him in as her pet. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Yet somehow this bizarre arrangement turns into one of the sweetest, most heartwarming love stories ever.

The series is a beautiful exploration of vulnerability and trust from a very campy angle.

Why the 2003 Version of You're My Pet Is Better Than 2017 One

Just like with every other remake, this one tries to take a modern look at the story. But the most important thing they missed is the emotional depth of the original.

The 2017 version feels like it's trying too hard to be relatable to modern viewers, which ironically makes it less so.

What made the 2003 version absolutely iconic was how it just owned its quirkiness without trying to justify it. The chemistry between the leads was off the charts and they weren't afraid to lean into the absurdity of their situation. The original Sumire and Momo had this dynamic that just made you believe in their weird little world.

Moreover, the 2003 version had this dreamy early-2000s aesthetic that honestly can't be replicated. It's a total time capsule of the era. But unlike some shows that feel dated, this one's nostalgic charm only adds to its appeal. We didn't really need that modernization.

Now I'm not saying the 2017 remake is unwatchable or anything. It's fine. But when you've got the original 2003 version sitting right there, being all perfect and wonderfully weird, why would you want something else? And the good news is that it's actually available on YouTube right now.
