And it’s still one of the most unexpected cast decisions in cinema.

There are several actresses in Hollywood who remain the sweethearts of the industry after decades in the business. One of them is definitely Anne Hathaway, who made sure we loved her from the moment we saw her in The Princess Diaries. Well, no chance to not like any ugly duckling-like story, right?

After that, Hathaway became the star of another hit movie called The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt. The film is still one of my favorite comforters, but there's another movie with Hathaway in it that I can say with certainty is my personal pick in her filmography. And it's not even Les Misérables, for which she won an Oscar.

The movie in the talk is the 2015 comedy-drama The Intern. While it only received a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it still holds a special place as my favorite Anne Hathaway movie. Here's why.

The film tells the story of a young female CEO, Jules Ostin, played by Hathaway, who is having a hard time balancing her life at home and at work. An unlikely rescue comes in the form of an old widowed man, Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro who is trying to add some color to his life. The 70-year-old man becomes an intern at her company, knowing absolutely nothing about online shopping or fashion.

They don't get along at first, but over time the unlikely friendship blossoms. It's one of those rare times when the characters are written so well that they're like real people we meet every day. Hell, they are us, because we too fake it till we make it, just like Jules did throughout the movie, hiding under the mask of a fearless leader, but dead inside.

What could have been a simple comedy about generational differences turns into a heartwarming exploration of work-life balance, mentorship, and even self-discovery. Hathaway's performance as Jules is nuanced and authentic. And I would say that when it comes to portraying a strong yet vulnerable woman struggling to balance the demands of her career and personal life, Hathaway is the best choice.

But the charm of The Intern lies not only in its performances, but in its overall message. It speaks to the value of wisdom, the importance of friendship even when you didn’t want it at first, and the ability to find joy in the simplest aspects of life.

The Intern is available to stream on AppleTV+.
