Is there really a plot hole in Stranger Things season 1?

Ever since Stranger Things first came out, it has been stealing our hearts with its thrilling plotlines, nostalgic '80s vibes, and unforgettable characters. But like with any intricate story, there are moments that leave fans scratching their heads and turning to the internet for answers.

While the series is not famous for being full of annoying plot holes, there is one moment that has been recently brought up on Reddit which can be a potential continuity error.

The moment in question revolves around Dr. Brenner and Eleven. In season 1, we see Dr. Brenner (or Papa as his “trainees” call him) looking pretty shocked when Eleven takes out the scientist guards.

But here's the issue: in season 4, it's revealed that he already knew about Eleven's immense power. So, why was he so surprised? And why would he think two unarmed men could restrain Eleven?

Some fans believe that the creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, might not have planned out Eleven's story arc for season 4 when they were working on season 1. It's possible that they hadn't thought about the whole memory loss angle and Eleven's past encounters with immense power.

Another theory is that Dr. Brenner was testing Eleven's abilities step by step. He might have been unsure if her powers were still intact after certain traumatic events. So, when she displayed her powers in season 1, it was a sign to him that she was regaining control.

One fan pointed out that this situation is similar to Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars claiming he doesn't remember owning a droid, even though he had many adventures with R2-D2 in the prequels.

Sometimes, shows and movies have these continuity errors or retcons, and if they were to revisit earlier seasons, they might change certain scenes to fit the narrative of later seasons.

While it's fun to dissect and discuss these potential plot holes, it's also important to remember that sometimes, storylines evolve as a show progresses. The creators might have new ideas or directions they want to take, leading to some inconsistencies. As fans, we just have to accept it.

Do you think these kinds of inconsistencies are significant?
