Modern Family was a great sitcom that we all enjoyed for 11 years, but there was one thing that didn't sit right with us even back then (and it still doesn't now).

Most of the characters, especially the kids, enjoyed a nice development over the seasons. Haley became a mom, Alex found career success, and Manny grew out of his awkward-nerd phase.

However, fans are upset with teenage Lily and older Luke's personalities (or rather lack thereof).

Luke was an adorable goofball as a kid, and we all expected him to grow up to be a goofy adult (much like his dad and grandpa).

What did the writers do? They turned him into a walking cliché. In later seasons, Luke is somewhat of a creepy womanizer with no depth whatsoever.

By the way, fans blame it all on Phil who hasn't always acted appropriately in situations with attractive women (yes, we mean Gloria). Apparently, it has rubbed off on Luke.

Lily is no better. She was always the most compelling kid to watch with her ruthless demeanor and effortlessly hilarious mishaps.

As she grew up, Lily became just another run-of-the-mill teenager, indistinguishable in personality from the rest. Fans would have loved to see her develop into a strong independent young woman instead.

We have to admit, it would have been fascinating to see more of her dynamic with her dads, given that she has grown up to be a very different person from them.

People take issue with these characters because they feel that the writers have gotten lazy with them and eventually started using them as background plot devices and nothing more.

Both Luke and Lily had far fewer scenes in the later seasons, and the ones they did have weren't nearly as funny anyway.

Others believe that the writers just treated them as teenagers (which is what they were), and teenagers are typically not that interesting – at least, not compared to kids who are usually more authentic and still unburdened by societal pressure.

Do you agree that Modern Family ruined Lily and Luke? Personally, we loved them until the end, but their growth could have been handled better and with more consistency.
