The Tom Hardy vehicle gets specific about the details.

Summary:

  • Sony’s Venom film series form the first entry of the studio’s planned franchise based on Marvel comics characters.
  • As of this writing, the series’ current two films, 2018’s Venom and its 2021 sequel Let There Be Carnage, have hauled over $1,357 million worldwide.
  • A third Venom movie is currently in the works, which has recently received a subtitle with a fixed release date set.

As much as audiences love to root for heroes, sometimes it’s just more of a thrill with baddies running the show.

This has been clearly the case for the audiences of Sony’s superhero blockbusters Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which together earned more than $1,357 million worldwide.

For all intents and purposes, the Venom movies are the star piece of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU for short), which, despite appearances, is not at all about the famous wall-crawler, giving the limelight to secondary characters like the titular symbiote, who bears the civilian name of Eddie Brock.

It’s worth noting that the Sony version of the Spider-Man antagonist, played by Tom Hardy, is purposely distanced from the webhead himself, which seems to be a conscious attempt by the studio to avoid stepping on the MCU ’s toes – despite Hardy’s take making a cameo in 2019’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In the wake of his solo success, Venom is set to return for a third outing. Its filming has allegedly wrapped and the newest SSU addition is on course for a theatrical release. First-time director Kelly Marcel takes the directorial reins from Andy Serkis and serves as a co-producer and writer, having co-developed the story with Hardy.

Recent update confirms that the previously unnamed film will be titled Venom: The Last Dance, and that it will release on October 25, 2024. This is a change from its original release date of November 8, 2024.

Few other details are known about the soon-to-release film. However, its newly-unveiled subtitle has a certain ring of finality, making the movie seem like a trilogy-capper.

Aside from Hardy donning the guise of the alien antihero once again, The Last Dance will also star Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple and Clark Backo, whose roles in the finished film are unknown.

The news of The Last Dance’s arrival has upset some lore purists among the fandom, who claim that the franchise’s actual hero is getting sidelined in favor of less essential figures.

Black never goes out of style, it seems.
