According to Beedle the Bard, a wizard who’d collect all three Deathly Hallows will become the Master of Death. What exactly does that status imply?

Summary:

  • The Tale of the Three Brothers claims that a person who collects all three Deathly Hallows would become the Master of Death.
  • Since these artifacts’ effects don’t stack, the only real outcome of wielding all three Hallows would be possessing all three of their powers.
  • Additionally, the Master of Death would be under thrice as much risk of going insane or becoming a victim of the Hallow hunters.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we first learn about The Tale of the Three Brothers, Beedle the Bard’s version of how the Deathly Hallows came to be. While largely considered to be just a cautionary fairy tale, this story describes three very powerful artifacts that do exist in the Wizarding World, and we get to see them all.

But does that mean that other aspects of The Tale are true? And what does the “Master of Death” status mean for the person who becomes one?

Deathly Hallows Grant Immense Power

Each of the three Deathly Hallows is unique and powerful in its own right. The Invisibility Cloak beats any other object with a Disillusionment Charm by a large margin; the Elder Wand gives raw magical power to the person wielding it; and the Resurrection Stone brings back the shadows of the dead from beyond the Veil.

But as great as they are, people always want something more — and according to Beedle the Bard, the Deathly Hallows can provide that. A person who would collect and use all three Deathly Hallows at once would allegedly become the “Master of Death,” a title that, while sounds cool, was not explained in the Harry Potter books.

‘Master of Death’ Is an Honorary Title

Unfortunately for those seeking absolute power, the Deathly Hallows don’t work like the Infinity Stones from the MCU. Their powers don’t amplify each other, and there’s no special effect of possessing all three of the legendary artifacts simultaneously.

The only plausible outcome of collecting the Deathly Hallows is… Being able to use all three artifacts. With the raw power of the Elder Wand, the guidance from beyond the Veil of the Resurrection Stone, and the perfect stealth of the Invisibility Cloak, the self-proclaimed Master of Death would indeed have impressive abilities, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

But hey, they would also be hunted by all the people who seek the Hallows, combined — and have an increased chance of going insane from using these artifacts, be it paranoia from the Wand, depression from the Stone, or the… Wait… Voyeurism of the Cloak?..
