Will Mamma Mia 3 Ever Happen? Franchise’s Star Says ‘There Is a Desire’

Don't know about you, but we'd love to see (and hear) ABBA songs accompany a heartfelt story once again.
Even if you are not a fan of musicals, there’s no way that you didn't like the iconic 2008 movie Mamma Mia! at least for the choice of soundtrack. The movie features all the best songs of the Swedish group and makes the experience of watching the movie 100 times better.
The original Mamma Mia movie has an iconic cast, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and so many more amazing actors that made sure the movie ends up in our hearts.
For those who don't remember, the plot of the movie revolves around a mother-daughter relationship and a secret that mother Donna has kept from her daughter Sophie for so many years. The thing is, Sophie didn't know who her father was, and it turns out that there are three men who could be her fathers. So Sophie invites them all to her wedding in Greece to find out the truth.
But 10 years later, the film's crew decided it was time for a sequel, and released Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018. While there were many people who were against the second installment, claiming that it would ruin the legacy of the movie. Instead, the new chapter only deepened the story for everyone involved and made it even more heartfelt.
So the question is, will there ever be another part of the franchise? Especially since the anniversary is only three years away, and if Mamma Mia 3 were to premiere in 2008, it would continue the tradition of getting a new movie every 10 years. Well, there’s a promising update from the franchise’s star, Amanda Seyfried who portrayed Sophie.
In a recent interview with Collider, she said that there is a chance that a new movie will come.
"I think the second one proves that there’s always a need or a desire. I’m holding out hope. I’m not holding my breath for it to happen at any specific point, but I do believe, in my heart of hearts, that we’re all going to band together to make it happen,” she said.
Her main point was that the cast was absolutely on board with the second film, with the help of Meryl Streep, of course, who returned for a brief moment.
Seyfried also believes it's time for the cast to return to Greece to film the third and likely final installment.
“I also am 100% positive we’ll do it in Greece to bring home,” the actress noted.
So there's hope that Abba and Mamma Mia's main characters will sing along once again before letting go of the story.
Until then, it’s probably time to binge Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again on Apple TV+.
