For as long as movies have been a thing, professional film critics and snobbish audiences have looked down on horror films, deeming them unworthy of even being in the same conversation as prestige Hollywood dramas and sprawling historical epics.

Needless to say, this long-standing prejudice against scary movies was quite detrimental to the development of the genre, as producers would not give horror directors even a fraction of the money that big-budget projects received.

Fortunately, the Academy Awards decided to step in at some point and have awarded 10 horror films with golden statuettes in the last 50 years or so.

As you've probably noticed, all of the films on this list are true horror masterpieces, influencing generations of filmmakers and fans, breaking the boundaries of horror representation, and basically forcing critics to pay attention to this wonderful genre.

Of course, most of the films on this list are not true horrors per se, as their directors certainly flirted with other genres, presenting audiences with an endlessly watchable mix of horror and prestige drama, a tactic that certainly appealed to academics.

However, with the 2024 Oscars failing to include a single horror film, it seems that the genre as a whole still has a long way to go to finally reach the mainstream.

The Oscars 2024 will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event is to start at 7 p.m. EST.
