‘Dept Q’ Is My New Favorite Crime Thriller & Here’s Why

From the first minute into the show you realise it’s going to take you to some very dark places. Dept Q is a rather new series on Netflix, it was only released on May 29, but it seems like people are not aware what they are sleeping on as nobody is talking about how perfect the series is. Well, I am here to change it.

What Is ‘Dept Q’ About?

The series is set in Edinburgh and follows a conflicted, but brilliant detective who is also kind of a jerk to others. He has a reputation of being the toughest to work with, but seems like he doesn't care about it, as long as he has a partner he actually likes. However one day they visit a murder scene together, only to be attacked by an unknown assassin.

After some time in isolation, thinking about whatever happened there and how he now felt about it, DCI Carl Morck finally comes out of his shell and goes back to work, where his boss assigns him to a special photo op case to solve – which he has to choose for himself.

Right at that time another story unfolds in parallel storytelling. A lawyer, Merritt Lingard, with a certain professional reputation (again) is being kidnapped and held in captivity for years. At first we know nothing about who did it to her and why they keep on making her suffer, but later we discover that her kidnapper is an elderly woman.

Then the story enters my absolute favorite TV character of recent years, Akram Salim, the former Syrian fighter now being trapped in the IT branch of police, who becomes Carl’s partner/assistant. It was him who researched all the cases and chose the one of Merritt Lingard’s for Carl to crack.

There are nine episodes in the released season 1 and I watched them all in one sitting. That’s how brilliant the show is. Now let’s talk about what makes it so good.

What makes Dept Q exceptional TV is the way it immediately states its superior nature. It’s smart, moody, unpredictable and atmospheric. The gritty setting goes hand in hand with the annoying nature of Carl, and Akram serves as the placeholder and the series’ “wise man” character. And also he is nice to look at…

Every twist that comes your way is absolutely unpredictable, and each new character has its own place in the story. And talking about characters, all of them are written perfectly. They have authentic traits and feel like real people facing never-ending moral dilemmas.
