A movie trying a little too hard to win an Oscar is a story as old as time, as the world's biggest movie award has been building hype decade after decade, forcing producers to fight for golden statuettes year after year.

However, not every film is destined to become an Oscar winner, and usually the top prizes are won by films created with genuine passion for filmmaking, films that surprise audiences and critics alike, and not those that are scientifically created to resemble past Best Picture winners.

Here are 10 Oscar bait movies that didn't win:

First of all, not every movie on this list is inherently bad. On the contrary, some of the entries on this list were clearly made with passion by both the director and his cast, but at some point during post-production, the producers decided to spend their money and time not on improving the quality of a movie, but on marketing it as a potential Oscar winner. Needless to say, academics hate being told who to vote for.

Of course, some films on this list, like the abysmal "Cats," were groomed to be Oscar winners from day one of production, and it was incredibly satisfying to watch that blockbuster musical fall to pieces upon its realization.

Like all good things in life, Oscars usually come out of nowhere!

The Oscars 2024 will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event is to start at 7 p.m. EST.
