Hollywood can be an extremely hostile place, especially when it comes to awards.

Major studios are extremely protective of their right to receive Oscar nominations and awards for their films, and small studios find it quite difficult to compete with the millions of dollars in marketing dollars that studios spend each year to ensure that their films have a place at the Academy Awards.

As a result, countless great films have failed to win a single Oscar, but that doesn't mean they've been forgotten. On the contrary, their continued success only proves how biased and trite the Academy Awards have become.

Here are 15 great movies without Oscar nominations:

Let's face it, after looking at this list, anyone will wonder if the Oscar voting committee even knows what good cinema is. It's confusing to know that great movies like "The Big Lebowski" and "Heat" didn't get a single Oscar nomination, while a total train wreck of a movie like "Shakespeare in Love" was practically showered with awards and nominations.

Obviously, the Oscars can't nominate every worthy movie that comes out in a year, but they can at least make an effort to make their selections more realistic, as every single movie on this list could have easily competed for the top prize, and it says a lot about the Oscars' status as a champion of movie recognition.

The Oscars 2024 will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event is to start at 7 p.m. EST.
