No disrespect to Grey's Anatomy, but it's not the only exciting medical drama out there.

If you're bored with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital doctors, then maybe it's time to switch to New Amsterdam.

Max Goodwin becomes the medical director at New Amsterdam, the oldest hospital in New York. The honorary position is considered cursed due to constant staff turnover, and Goodwin's colleagues are already placing bets on how long the new boss will last.

Here’re five reasons why Max Goodwin deserves your attention.

1. The show is based on the real story

New Amsterdam is based on the true story of Eric Manheimer, the former medical director at Bellevue Hospital in New York, from his memoir Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital.

It's not just horror filmmakers who like to use real-life stories. If you find it hard to believe in the reality of what happens in a horror movie, then knowing that a medical drama has a real basis makes it all the more exciting to watch.

2. The main idea is deeper than it seems

The show has enough tragedy, manipulation of the viewer's emotions, and sad music at the end of the episodes.

But the main conflict of the show is also visible – the confrontation between the doctor and the whole system. The reformer and efficient manager Goodwin and the New Amsterdam Medical Center, which he wants to change.

3. Strong team and cast

New Amsterdam's directors include Michael Slovis (Better Call Saul ), Darnell Martin (The Walking Dead ) and Peter Horton (Grey's Anatomy).

The actors have been so brilliantly chosen that after a while you really start to think about making an appointment with one of the characters. Dr. Goodwin was played by Ryan Eggold, known to many from the TV series Sons of Liberty and The Blacklist.

4. Romances that will keep you on the edge of your seat

Thought doctors spent all their time in a hospital? No, they are real people with their own lives and experiences, and New Amsterdam does a good job of reminding us of that.

It will be no less interesting to follow the characters' love affairs and personal problems than the fate of their patients.
