Why bother creating them at all?

The love triangle is probably the most commonly used romance trope that you can't escape. Sometimes it adds to the show or the movie, becoming the unexpected twist or the long-awaited thing that shakes up the plot a bit.

But there have been times when these love triangles just annoyed fans, that's how unnecessary they were to the overall storyline. So, without further ado, here are some of the grossest triangles that shows had for us.

4. Carrie, Big, and Aidan — Sex and the City

The iconic show gave fans something to talk about for ages, and even now, with the release of the spinoff And Just Like That, the discussion continues. Carrie's obsession with her dream man, Mr. Big, was obvious in the original series.

However, it was also evident that things would never have worked out between her and Aidan. And once again, the spinoff proved that her and Aidan's problem wasn't Big. She just needs someone else.

3. Jim, Pam, and Karen — The Office

The most annoying thing about this love triangle was that it wasn't a love triangle to begin with. There was Pam, who was jealous of Jim's new girlfriend, and there was Karen, who was jealous of Jim's... special friend. And Jim was just doing random things with his life, trying to feel something.

Every The Office fan knew that Jim and Pam were the endgame couple, so this Karen mix-up was completely unnecessary.

2. Eric, Adam, and Rahim — Sex Education

When Eric and Adam from Sex Education became a couple, it was quite a controversial move by the audience's standards. On the one hand, the "villains become lovers" trope is a fan favorite.

But on the other hand, their relationship was so complicated and brought so much suffering to both of them that when free-as-a-bird Rahim entered the picture, we reluctantly started rooting for him. Only to realize that Eric needs something completely different that neither of them can give him.

1. Ted, Robin, and Barney — How I Met Your Mother

This love triangle was actually the most unexpected one ever. The whole premise of the show was to get Robin and Ted together, but instead they faced so many cringe-worthy obstacles that only kept them apart.

When Barney entered the picture as Robin's love interest, it could only mean one of two things: the storyline would be a disaster, or Robin and Barney would become the endgame couple. And while many fans eagerly waited for the second storyline to pan out, it never did. The whole arc was thrown out the window.
