There are tens of movies in Quentin Tarantino’s top list of favorites, but only this Japanese war drama makes him wish he was the one to direct it.

Quentin Tarantino’s blood-filled movies might not be to everyone’s taste, but few will deny his expertise when it comes to the world of all kinds of movies and shows.

Having learnt how to direct films not from high-rank professors but from films themselves, Tarantino has seemingly seen it all and not just once, sometimes even being jealous for other directors whose ideas Tarantino wishes he had planted in his movies too.

Still, not many films that the director considers his favorite make him feel this way, but there’s at least one epic battle movie that Tarantino can’t get out of his head — especially since The Hunger Games franchise somehow replicated it, and not in the best way.

Quentin Tarantino Wishes He’d Directed ‘Battle Royale’

Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, the Japanese dystopian action movie will actually sound somewhat familiar to The Hunger Games’ fans, following a group of high school students who participate in a deadly competition sponsored by Japanese authoritarian government.

Tarantino has been vocal about his special love for Battle Royale, saying that it still hurts him that he wasn’t the one to actually bring such an idea into the world of the cinema. And it hurts even more when he remembers how badly The Hunger Games treated the premise.

“I’m a big fan of the Japanese movie ‘Battle Royale,’ which is what ‘Hunger Games’ was based on. Well, ‘Hunger Games’ just ripped it off. That would have been awesome to have directed ‘Battle Royale’”, Tarantino once said during his appearance at Jimmy Kimmel Live! several years ago.

What Are Quentin Tarantino’s Top 10 Movies?

Even though the director’s complete list of favorites includes tens of movies, if not hundreds, his fans have succeeded in making the top 10, based on how frequently and with how much admiration Tarantino has been mentioning those films throughout years.

Battle Royale, however, is nowhere to be found here, but Tarantino’s heart is forever given to Western cult classics like Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo.

Apart from that, Tarantino considers himself a huge fan of Brian De Palma’s Blow Out and Carrie, as well as Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver.

Hawks’ His Girl Friday also makes it to the top of the list, with Jeong Chang-Hwa’s Five Fingers of Death coming next.

Lastly, three other movies Tarantino has been obsessed with are G. W. Pabst’s Pandora Box, Preston Sturges’s Unfaithfully Yours and Billy Wilder’s Five Graves to Cairo.
