More than half of the Big Bang Theory fans believe that the relationship between a socially awkward scientist and his hot next-door neighbor is totally probable.

Leonard and Penny are one of the main couples in the Big Bang Theory, and their relationship has played a major role in the development of the Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre series as a fans' all-time favorite show. Though the couple is fictional, there is not a single Big Bang Theory fan who doesn't have an opinion about it. Many fans can relate to their relationship, while others think it is totally unrealistic.

Now, these opinions have been translated into numbers thanks to the poll created on Reddit. Turns out, opinions are almost equally divided, with 45% of the Big Bang Theory fans thinking Lenny is as unrealistic as they can get. Let's dive unto the fans' reasoning.

First, the majority of unbelievers feel that Leonard and Penny have nothing in common. She's hot, he's not. He's smart, she's not. He cares, she doesn't.

"Penny makes fun of all the hobbies Leonard finds entertaining. And I don't remember any time when Leonard took interest in her life. If I had to guess, I'd say their tolerance towards Sheldon is what kept them together," one fan commented, and others agreed.

Secondly, fans noted that the relationship between Leonard and Penny are too dysfunctional and toxic to last long.

"She is mean, cruel even, she was a nice person in the first two seasons but she became bitter and mean towards Leonard, bullying him all the time. I don't think that kind of toxicity makes it a good relationship, that would last," another unbeliever wrote.

Big Bang Theory Late Seasons Ruined Sheldon for Good

To be fair, the majority of fans still believe the weird chemistry Leonard and Penny have can be found in real life, even though couples like that are too far from an example of a perfect relationship.

"Couples like that happen all the time. They are never as happy as Leonard and Penny though. They either divorce or spend the rest of their life not liking each other," a fan commented.

Well, probably Lenny is not the most realistic fictional couple a TV show can offer but no one could argue that throughout 12 seasons of the series the couple has encountered issues too familiar to many real-life couples: break-ups, insecurities, career and household budget changes, complicated relationships with families, a weird friend to take care of – just kidding, that's exclusively Sheldon, –parenthood disputes and many more. All this drama has made Lenny a couple that many can relate to.
