Although Heartstopper is a fairly accurate adaptation of the original story, it does have some differences from the novels.

Netflix 's Heartstopper continues to win the hearts of fans around the world after the release of its second season. It's no secret to fans that the show is based on Alice Oseman's graphic novels and follows the original story pretty closely, but not all plots and details can be transferred to the small screen, so some aspects have been changed.

1. James wasn’t so important

James is another student at Truham and a friend of Isaac's. In the second season, James appears as a character who helps reveal more about Isaac and shows him from the other side.

In the original source, James has a much less important role – he appears only as a participant in the game of Truth or Dare, whom Charlie refuses to kiss.

2. Ben disappeared after breaking up with Charlie

Ben is Charlie's toxic ex who wants him back after a relationship with Imogen that ended during a trip to Paris. Ben gets quite a bit of screen time, making him one of the main supporting characters.

In the novel, Ben disappears immediately after breaking up with Charlie. The show's decision to expand the Ben arc undoubtedly adds drama to the show and allows viewers to get to know Charlie better.

3. Charlie found out how he was outed under different circumstances

In the second season, Charlie finally found out how everyone in Truham knew he was gay. Tao confessed to him that everyone found out because he discussed it too loudly with Isaac, after which Charlie immediately forgave him.

In the books, the reason was the same, but Charlie learned the truth under different circumstances – he was told by Aled, who does not appear in the show. Because Charlie did not hear everything from Tao himself, he could not forgive him for a long time.

4. Isaac wasn’t in the books at all

One of the most noticeable characters in the second season was Isaac, who was completely absent from the graphic novels. Apparently, he replaced Aled, Charlie's friend who confesses to him that he has a boyfriend.

5. Elle and Tao's relationship got more developed in the show

In the second season, a lot of attention is paid to the relationship between Elle and Tao, who have come a long way from being friends to being a full-fledged couple in love. In the second season they go on a date that doesn't go according to plan, but in Paris they finally decide to be together.

In the books, the love affair between Elle and Tao only starts on a trip to Paris, and there was no date scene at all in the original source.
