TV series have to keep a certain balance: they should be long enough to properly establish the story and flesh out all the important characters but not long enough to become repetitive and boring.

Some shows, however, end up lasting for more than 20 seasons without losing their originality and they keep being interesting.

There are series with hundreds and thousands of episodes in them that don't really follow the times and fit in the current media space, but those that do stay relevant.

That's the case with animation shows, like The Simpsons, South Park, or Family Guy: they are essentially sitcoms that reflect the changes in the world and serve as a social commentary hidden under the layer of humor.

Procedural crime shows have a different reason for their longevity: they stay relevant because humans, in their essence, don't change much, and the reasons for the crimes that the characters investigate are repetitive; it's just the methods that are changing, and the thing that keeps everything fresh is the development of the main characters, like in Law & Order.

The same can be said about long-running medical dramas, like Grey's Anatomy: human drama keeps it relevant and fresh.
