Will the 'Gears of War' Movie Finally Bring Marcus Fenix to the Big Screen?

And could David Leitch’s vision finally do the franchise justice?
I’ve been waiting for this for what feels like forever. Gears of War — one of the most iconic Xbox franchises ever — is finally getting a live-action movie adaptation. Not an animated spin-off, not another rumour, but a real Gears of War movie with an actual director attached.
And not just any director — David Leitch, the guy who gave us Deadpool 2 and The Fall Guy.
Netflix confirmed back in May 2025 that Leitch is set to direct and co-produce the film, working with Jon Spaihts — yes, the screenwriter of Dune. That’s already a power duo for this long-awaited game adaptation.
David Leitch on Why the Gears of War Movie Feels Special
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch’s producing partner Kelly McCormick said:
"We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it... It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP."
That’s exactly what has me hyped — a sci-fi war movie with Leitch’s signature action style. If you’ve seen Bullet Train or Deadpool 2, you know he’s the guy for it.
Why This Gears of War Movie Feels Real This Time
Sure, there were attempts before — like back in 2007 when Len Wiseman was attached — but nothing happened. This time, it’s Netflix, The Coalition, and David Leitch.
The only downside? It won’t hit before the next game, Gears of War: E-Day, in 2026. But honestly, I’d rather they take their time and make it epic.
And yes, I’m still rooting for Dave Bautista as Marcus Fenix — tell me that wouldn’t be perfect for a Gears of War live-action movie.
